Super excited to announce my first solo show ‘& When the Seeds Fell‘ is opening next Friday 4th July @1014.gallery ‘& When the Seeds Fell’ is a deeply personal project exploring identity, masculinity, and cultural inheritance through portraits of my own family. Made between the UK and India, the work reflects on the tension between tradition and selfhood within the British Gujarati diaspora. Using photography and installation, I invite you into an intimate space shaped by memory, duty, and becoming. Huge huge thank you to all the people who helped me make this show happen. I wanted to delve into a few of the images from the show, in particular this diptych. These images were taken in my ancestral village in India, where my great grandfather, grandfather and my farther was born. After walking around with my family searching for what remained of our old family home we stumbled across the local school. I took these two images, one of girls gathered in quiet collectivity, the other of boys mimicking each other playfully. Together they become a reflection on how gendered behaviour is learned and enacted from childhood. The girls radiate care, collectivity, and patience, while the boys are energetic, mimicking, and roughhousing. I’m interested in how girls learn through protection, care, and solidarity, whereas boys mimic, copy, and posture. ‘& When the seeds fell’ on display until August 8th A series of edition prints both framed and unframed are available, as individual images and as a diptych. I got access to go behind the scenes of ‘Le Train Bleu’ the legendary 1920s ballet that brought together Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso and Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel.
