Today, Thursday 4 September, the fashion house he created and ran for half a century announced the death of its founder, the visionary designer Giorgio Armani. He was 91. Mr Armani had been ill since the summer but, characteristically dedicated, the company said he was still at work until his final days. In July, shortly before his ninety-first birthday, I emailed Mr Armani a series of questions for the new issue of Perfect. Willy Vanderperre had photographed him for the cover and we prepared the piece as a tribute to his remarkable 50-year-career. It’s still a tribute, only now to the man himself as well. Mr Armani was a singular figure in Italian fashion, gracious, witty, and driven.
