PIETER HUGO Portrait #30, Rwanda from the series 1994 (2015) C‑print 93 × 123 cm In this striking portrait from Hugo’s acclaimed 1994 series, the artist captures a child born after the seismic year that marked both the end of apartheid in South Africa and the Rwandan genocide. Taken in a countryside village, the image contrasts the youthful subject with historical weight, invoking resilience amid rich natural surroundings. Hugo’s work explores how East African children embody both the burden and promise of a history still in flux. #PieterHugo #1994Series #ContemporaryPhotography #RwandaPortrait #priskapasquergallery #ArtPhoto #AfricanArt #postcolonial #portraitphotography

PIETER HUGO Mr. Li, Beijing from the series ‘’Flat Noodle Soup Talk’’ 2015-16 c-print 75 × 56.3 cm In his own words, Hugo described Beijing as “the most existential place I’ve ever been”, where language barriers and overwhelming crowds deepened the sense of being an outsider, yet opened a doorway into the city’s intimate humanity. #PieterHugo #Beijing #FlatNoodleSoupTalk #ContemporaryPhotography #Portraiture #CPrint #priskapasquergallery

PIETER HUGO Untitled, Agbogbloshie Market, Accra, Ghana 2009 From the series Permanent Error C-print 101 × 101 cm A stark and haunting portrayal of one of the world’s largest e-waste sites. We’re proud to announce that the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art ( @sfmoma) has recently acquired Pieter Hugo’s ( @pieter.hugo.official) Untitled, San Francisco, 2014. First presented in Pieter Hugo’s solo exhibition Californian Wildflowers at Jonathan Carver Moore in Fall 2024, this work—alongside five other portraits taken in San Francisco’s Tenderloin in 2014—were created during Hugo’s residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts ( @headlandsarts). Moore shares, “We are deeply honored to have this work included in SFMOMA’s permanent collection. It’s incredibly meaningful to have presented this exhibition with Pieter Hugo—not only because the gallery is based in the Tenderloin, but because these portraits were captured in the Tenderloin, reflecting the soul of this neighborhood. For SFMOMA to acquire and preserve this work is a powerful acknowledgment of the community’s history, complexity, and humanity. It ensures that the stories held in these images will be seen, remembered, and valued for generations to come.” ____ Pieter Hugo (b. 1976, Johannesburg) is a Cape Town–based artist known for his striking portraiture that explores identity, post-colonialism, and the complexities of representation. His work has been exhibited at institutions such as MAXXI, Tate Modern, the Barbican, and the São Paulo Biennale, and is held in major collections including MoMA, SFMOMA, the Met, the Getty, and Centre Pompidou. He has received the Discovery Award at Rencontres d’Arles, the KLM Paul Huf Award, and the Seydou Keita Prize. #PieterHugo #CalifornianWildflowers #JonathanCarverMoore #SFMOMA #SanFrancisco #ContemporaryPhotography #DocumentaryPhotography #SouthAfricanArt #TenderloinDistrict #Tenderloin
