The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, but friends call us SFMOMA.
Kara Walker’s ( @kara_walker_official) “Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine)” just might have you finding and reflecting on something new each time you see it. Let’s take a deep dive into this installation on Floor 1 of our museum. 1️⃣ Walker brought in 35,000 lbs. of Obsidian stone to be used in the space, specifically for its healing properties. 2️⃣ The artist covered the heads in papier-mâché to make them resemble hand puppets. 3️⃣ The “Bell Holder” and “Water Bearer” costumes have an image of the 1906 San Francisco Fires. #KaraWalker #SFMOMA #ArtMuseum
“The Visitors” by Ragnar Kjartansson is more than a video installation—it’s an experience that slowly unearths emotions you didn’t even know were waiting to come out. Whether it’s your first visit or your tenth, there’s something hauntingly beautiful and powerful waiting for you across nine screens. 🎶 📍 Floor 6 ⌛ Closing Curtain September 28 #TheVisitors #SFMOMA #MediaArt #SF [Ragnar Kjartansson, The Visitors, 2012; jointly owned by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and The Museum of Modern Art, New York, acquired through the generosity of Mimi Haas and Helen and Charles Schwab; © Ragnar Kjartansson]
🌿 Coming this September: “Suzanne Jackson: What Is Love” 🌿 For over 60 years, @suzannejackson7268 has pushed the boundaries of painting with luminous color, poetic forms, and a deep reverence for the natural world. Opening September 27, “What Is Love” invites you into Jackson’s expansive creative universe — one rooted in beauty, freedom, and connection. Since 1987, SFMOMA’s “New Work” series has been a platform for experimentation—introducing our audience to innovative artists shaping the future of art. Now, “New Work: Sheila Hicks” brings her bold fiber sculptures to SFMOMA in a vibrant installation. Spanning intimate weavings to monumental forms, Hicks’s work draws from her personal landscapes in France. See Hicks’ suspended cords, vivid wrapped “bâtons,”—both in our New Work gallery and Floor 5 sculpture garden. 📸: Don Ross #SFMOMA #SheilaHicks #FiberArt #WomenArtists

An exhibition that has touched so many and created a space for us to connect with Ruth Asawa and her legacy is in its final days at SFMOMA. This has been such a special experience thanks to YOU. Asawa was deeply passionate about art for all and community, so it is only right that we hear from our community and their reflections while in “Ruth Asawa: Retrospective.” Closing September 2. #RuthAsawa #SFMOMA #BayArea #Community #SF Artwork © 2025 Ruth Asawa Lanier, Inc., courtesy David Zwirner
Will Ferrell got looped into Ruth Asawa’s legacy this week! The actor and comedian visited our “Ruth Asawa: Retrospective” exhibition, where Asawa’s youngest son, Paul Lanier, and our Chief Curator, Janet Bishop, guided him through the galleries.
