Yesterday, Magdalena Abakanowicz would have celebrated her 95th birthday. Her art remains powerful, and the vast archives she left behind serve as a significant source of knowledge about her life and work, while still holding many unknown stories. Recently, the Marta Magdalena Abakanowicz-Kosmowska and Jan Kosmowski Foundation, which manages her legacy, discovered several dozen 8 mm films shot by the artist and her husband. Just last week, I presented selected fragments of these films at a conference dedicated to Abakanowicz in Den Bosch, Netherlands. Even this brief presentation highlighted the artist’s keen observational skills and how she translated these insights into her art. It was truly inspiring to listen to the fascinating lectures by @anncoxon, @ewamewaaaa, and @fudalatomek, followed by a lively discussion with participants including Sjouk Hoitsma, @nadeche_remst and Zuzanna Grzeszek. I would like to thank @nathanjavandijk and @jacq_grandjean for the invitation. #symposium #MagdalenaAbakanowicz #Abakanowicz #art #GrootsInBrabant
Opnieuw zien we autoritaire regimes artistieke vrijheden beknotten.

In the Netherlands celebrating the end of an intense month of analyzing more than 1,618 submitted portfolios for the 18ITT. It was an incredibly challenging responsibility, to say the least, but believe we successfully selected a diverse set of works that will showcase a broad spectrum of contemporary artistic works utilising textiles that correspond to our theme. It has been heartwarming to follow the selected artists’ posts, stories, tags, and reposts about their selection and participation in the triennial. We are excited, too, and look forward to working together to realise the exhibition and discursive gatherings for “Deconstruction/Reconstruction.” A big thank you to all our colleagues and the people who shared the open call, but especially to everyone who applied. Our countdown to October begins now! #textilart #artist #curators #centalnemuzeumwlokiennictwa #contemporary
Yesterday was the last day it was possible for the exhibition ‚Magdalena Abakanowicz. Prologue’. It has been both a great pleasure and a challenge for me to bring back the artist’s first solo exhibition, hosted in the same space at Warsaw’s Kordegarda as it was 65 years ago. By attempting to recreate the exhibition based on the only existing archival photograph, it has been able to shed new light on this lesser-known period in the artist’s work just before her rise to international success. This presentation serves as an important reference point for researchers studying Magdalena Abakanowicz’s art. Collaborating with the artist’s closest associates, Stefania Zgudka and Tomasz Piątkowski, to prepare this exhibition has been an extraordinary privilege. #abakanowicz #curator #exhibiton #research #womenartists
A big thank you to the 1,618 artists who participated in the 18th International Triennial of Textile’s open call for artists. It’s a record-breaking turnover in the history of the triennial, and we can’t wait to announce all the selected artists this month. Regardless, we will be more than happy to see all of you in October in the opening week to celebrate together. Thank you again for your time and interest in our curatorial vision! #abakanowicz #magdalenaabakanowicz #exhibition #kordegarda #fundacjamagdalenyabakanowicz #textileart #contemporaryart #curator
Last week, I was honoured to be a part of an discussion panel organised by the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, in partnership with AWARE (Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions) @fondationcartier & @awarewomenart. The event focused on a major textile arts theme, bringing together researchers and artists to explore the practice of weaving from feminist and decolonial perspectives. This gathering coincided with the fabulous #olgadeamaral exhibition curated by @marieperennes. It was wonderful to reconnect with friends and meet many inspiring individuals. A huge thank you for the opportunity to exchange ideas and engage in meaningful conversations: @marieperennes @anncoxon #janisjefferies @the_real_ida.soul @annabela_tz @amandapinatih @andrei.f_d_z @carolina.ariza.gonzalez @mariehazard @keniaalmarazmurillo @matyldataszycka @abyy.gaye #foudationcartier #awarewomenart #centralnemuzeumwłókiennictwa #olgadeamaral #symposium #textileart #artinparis

This is our “friendly reminder” that the Open Call for Artists for the 18th International Triennial of Textile will close in 6 weeks (January 31, 2025). The theme of the 18th edition, “Deconstruction/Reconstruction” is propelled by a strong need for change in systems and structures built over centuries of injustice. Therefore, as curators of this edition, we (Marta Kowalewska and Bukola Oyebode-Westerhuis) are looking for artistic practices questioning, transforming, criticising or rejecting these old orders as well as those proposing new possibilities, multiple pathways to restoration and repair, looking back to erased traditions that can still benefit humanity and imagining ways that our world can evolve from a state of never-ending violence. The application is open to contemporary artists of different generations, genders, and nationalities working with textiles, textile methodology, or interweaving textiles with new media practices. Please visit the Triennial section of @centralnemuzeumwlokiennictwa website for the open call regulations document. It includes the curatorial preamble of the theme and how to apply. All selected artists/artists groups will be announced in March 2025. #18ITTLodz #TriennaleTkaninyŁodzi #TextileTriennialLodz #sztukitkaniny #TriennaleTkaniny #ArtofTextile #CMWL #Lodz #Poland
Thank you @vogue.polska and Wojciech Delikta for this short but articulate interview about the 18th ITT. We are excited by the enthusiasm for this edition and looking forward to all the responses to our open call for artists. Translated interview excerpt: “The open call for artists for the 18th International Triennial of Textile, organised by the Central Museum of Textile Industry in Lodz is underway....We talk about the art of textile and the upcoming edition of the triennial with curators: Marta Kowalewska and Bukola Oyebode-Westerhuis.” “The 18th edition of the triennial expands the scope of works that can be submitted as part of the open call. We look forward to new media practices or other artistic forms inspired by textile thinking and methodology, even if textiles are not predominant in the works. We would like our selections for the triennial to reflect different genders and narratives that correspond with the theme of “Deconstruction/Reconstruction”. This topic is very much contemporary and encompasses different issues we are facing in the world today. That is why we are interested in artists who reinterpret textile, giving it a bold political and socio-cultural dimension, capable of shifting our perception and approach to multiple ways of existing in the world.” You can find the complete interview on www.vogue.pl (and translating to English is possible!) @polarhavet @centralnemuzeumwlokiennictwa @dalbiak #18ITTLodz #TriennaleTkaninyŁodzi #TextileTriennialLodz #sztukitkaniny #TriennaleTkaniny #ArtofTextile #CMWL #Lodz #Poland
We are thrilled to be co-curators of the 18th edition of the International Triennial of Textile in Lodz Poland and together with @centralnemuzeumwlokiennictwa we are announcing the theme “Deconstruction/Reconstruction” for this edition and the open call to artists to participate. Contemporary artists utilising textiles, textile methodology, or interweaving textiles with new media practices can propose and submit works corresponding to the theme. Please see the main news below and visit the CMWL website for the complete curatorial introduction and regulations for the open call. www.cmwl.pl / Triennial ….. Reposting: @centralnemuzeumwlokiennictwa 📣 18th INTERNATIONAL TRIENNIAL OF TEXTILE THEME & OPEN CALL 🙌 We invite all individual artists and artistic groups who work with textiles as their creative medium to participate. 📌 The theme of the upcoming edition “Deconstruction/Reconstruction” encompasses the socio-political and economic challenges of the present time. These two concepts relate to the current condition of the world and a strong need for change arising from a scrutiny of the non-inclusive old orders and systems. This theme also corresponds with new developments and changes within the Triennial. 👭 For the first time, the event will have two curators: Marta Kowalewska and Bukola Oyebode-Westerhuis. They will select the works for the main exhibition but will not participate in the deliberations of the international jury. ❓ What else has changed? 🗂 In the previous edition, artists could only submit one work created within the past three years. This time, you can submit a PORTFOLIO containing works from the past five years (there’s no limit on the number of works, although submitting a single piece, as previously, is also allowed). 🫵 We look forward to receiving your applications! #CMWŁ #CMWL #Lodz #Łódź #MuzeumWłókiennictwa #MuzeumWlokiennictwa #Triennale #18MTT #Textiles #Sztuka #Wystawa #Tkanina #textileart #18ITT #modernart #contemporaryart #InternationalTriennial #TkaninaArtystyczna #Exhibition #TextileArt #History #Design
