When I found out I would be on set with the most prolific music video director for an @essentials campaign, it took me some time to process. I’ve been on many sets of different magnitudes, but to be shooting stills alongside one of the greatest storytellers of all time was beyond surreal and truly a career highlight. Throughout the entire shoot, I kept thinking about how monumental this man is and how formative he has been in shaping culture. He has been more instrumental than most artists in defining a generation and shaping how we view music. This is the man who directed some of the greatest music videos of all time and has collaborated with the greatest artists of all time. I couldn’t find the courage during the shoot to tell Hype Williams how much he has meant to me and to an entire generation who grew up with his visual storytelling, but I’m certain he knows how deeply his work has permeated our lives. Today was a beautiful day because Michael Rider received his flowers. To know Michael is a privilege, but to call him a friend is pure joy. For so long, Michael has worked tirelessly behind the scenes, and today the world finally got to see and celebrate his brilliance. For every celebrated and revered creative director or designer, there is always a team behind the vision helping to execute that genius. Michael has been instrumental in some of the most pivotal collections of the 21st century. If you know, you truly know. Michael just gets it. If you examine the gestural details of every look in his debut Celine collection, you can see how mindfully he thinks about the person he’s designing for—and how a life is lived in his clothes. At the exact moment The Cure’s soundtrack came on and the rain poured down as the models continued to strut, I was transported back to the first Balmain show I snuck into 18 years ago. I felt that same euphoria and joy. Those moments don’t come often, and I cannot wait to continue witnessing Michael’s journey at Celine. I couldn’t be more grateful to have had the opportunity to document the pre Met Gala fittings of an incredible assemblage of cultural luminaries that @jerrylorenzo curated for his Met Gala table. This group truly spans the world of art, film, fashion and sports and each individual transcends greatness in their own right.
