“Luxury, to me, is the space to be with oneself, to know oneself, to enjoy your own company, or at least to give yourself space to be in your own company,” Tracee Ellis Ross ( @traceeellisross) says in SELF’s July cover story. If that is Ross’s definition of a luxe life, then she is living it. This month, her show ‘Solo Traveling with Tracee Ellis Ross’ debuts on the Roku Channel. In it, she bounces from Morocco to Mexico to Spain, basking in pools and spa treatments, shopping local boutiques, wandering through gardens, and sitting down to a 6 p.m. dinner reservation—exemplifying what it’s like to travel alone. “Can you be yourself, by yourself out in the world?” she poses. “It's one thing to discover who you are, and it's another to have the courage to be that person.” However, any solo traveler knows that it’s not all fabulous. And neither is solo life: As confident as she sounds, Ross’s constant fight against cultural norms also includes fear and anxiety, two very human things to feel even if you are happily single. Everyone is talking about Tracee Ellis Ross ( @traceeellisross)’s relationship status. She would be reluctant to call herself an activist merely because she has never married, but she has inadvertently become the face of a generation of single women in America. “I'm not interested in [being the poster child for] single-dom, because I am looking to meet a partner,” she says. “What I don't mind is being a poster child for living your life on your own terms, for not waiting for partnership to find joy and happiness, for curating and cultivating one's own sense of self.” For our July cover, Ross gets real about what it means to be a single fifty-something woman today with SELF Editor in Chief @jcruel. Rafael Nadal was famous for pulling at his shorts, tucking his hair behind his ears, and touching his nose before a serve. Serena Williams was known to bounce her ball a specific number of times (five on the first serve, and two on the second). Naomi Osaka bobs on her feet and Iga Świątek checks her pockets. Many of the biggest tennis stars repeat the same small behaviors before tossing up a serve, and we wanted to understand why. Head to the link in bio to hear from a sports psychologist on what's at work behind a service routine, and how it affects a player’s overall game. ✍: @northcarolina1997 📸: Getty Images
On Wednesday, images of Kate Middleton sporting a new, blonde look surfaced on social media. While many websites and Instagram accounts took to praising her lighter locks and reposting the photos, the comments sections of these posts told a different story. They were flooded with questions about Middleton’s health—in 2024, she announced she had cancer—and wondered, aloud, whether she might be wearing a wig or how she managed to have more hair after treatment. “With the rise of the body positive movement, the social consciousness became (somewhat) more aware that these comments are unacceptable and harmful,” Alison Mann, LCSW, ( @alison_mann) who has alopecia areata, writes for @selfmagazine. “But what the online conversation about Middleton shows is that we’ve quickly forgotten that someone’s hair—or hair loss—is just like their size or skin.” In other words: It’s no one’s business. To the average tennis fan, the #USOpen wildcard pairing of #VenusWilliams and #LeylahFernandez sounded like just another doubles matchup. That is, until you consider their whopping 23-year age gap—a difference experts say may be part of why they clicked so effortlessly. Whether it’s five years between you or 20, an age-gap friendship can actually enrich our lives in ways same-age connections can’t. Read the case for why you, too, should consider befriending someone a decade older (or younger)—at the link in bio. ✍: @jennaaryu 📸: Getty Images
In 2020, at seven months pregnant, @alexmorgan13 was still training with the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team. She gave birth to her daughter, Charlie, that May, and returned to the field less than six months later. The mental and physical strain was difficult enough that she decided growing her family meant speeding up her retirement from soccer. Now, the mom of two is speaking out about the postpartum pressures athletes face to @selfmagazine . In an attempt to counter post-baby “snapback” culture, and the pressure for a picture perfect feeding journey, Morgan decided to partner with organic infant formula company @bobbie for their new campaign, “There’s No Scoreboard in Motherhood.” Tap the link in bio to find out how Morgan is hanging up the stigma of moms being compared to one another—along with her cleats. ✍️: @maracsantilli 📸: Courtesy of Alex Morgan and Getty Images
