Self-discovery, reflection, and growth are supposed to be the cornerstones of a healthy life. Truth be told, I still have no idea how to make overnight oats. Every year I work for the circus as a photographer at @glastofest. Loud, scary noises. Camera gear knocking against my leg. No sleep. That, I understand. It’s oddly comforting to know that my friends- whether they’re having kids, buying houses, or getting married- are still just as bewildered by life as I am. For a while, I struggled to justify it all- until recently, when I landed photography work with new clients like Aesop and Liberty London. Go me. I look foward to sharing what I’ve been up to. Working in lighting basically involves a lot of banging metal together whilst looking busy. I like to work up a sweat to really sell the illusion to my colleagues and producers that I am, in fact, working hard. The summer heat really helps with that. I tell myself daily that surely this is the sweatiest I’ll ever be- but that is a lie. The hottest day has to be when @tiesto knocked on my door and asked me to make a music video for him, @cleanbandit and @leony. I said, “Sure mate, anything for you,” and called @jodi_.rabinowitz immediately to ask for her help. She trained on Broadway, programming lights to do all sorts of things for theatre shows, and has an incredible talent for this sort of thing. The star of the show was a huge circular truss with all sorts of strobes, spotlights and soft lights attached. With the talent spinning on this huge turntable below. Around the edges of the room were more spots, some disco lights and about 2 km of cable to get power to the heads - as well as a second run to control them. Everything was heavy, high up, and expensive. Think it took about 5 hours to get it all up. Crime is cool- no two ways about it. I suspect this is why director @georgenicholls decided to cause quite the stir on our @quadrant campaign. My favorite part was our suggestive side film where our AC and runner went off with a handycam to pretend to break in and spray paint a jet at Heathrow. Again, suggestive. As an industry fat cat and marketing guru myself — I well and truly support whatever is going on here. Shouts out the handsome @landoNorris. To the poor fucker that had to drive around London collecting several tonnes of 5-stage crank stands for this job, I do not envy you. Also known as Strato stands, they weigh in at about 60kg+ each on a good day and go basically higher than any other stand can reach before you have to pay some fella from Essex to come down and use his cherry picker. Just getting them in and out of the van really does suck. I think we had about 15 in the end—not to mention all the scaffold, textiles, cables, and lights. Two trucks turned up on the morning of our shoot with @boden to unload literally thousands of kilos of equipment necessary for blacking out an entire palace wall in Alexandra Palace. Pissing with sweat, my trusty minions @katerina_vahala_dp and @catcastrophic made quick work of it whilst I did what any good gaffer does best: looking busy and pointing my laser at things. To give our shoot a vintage feel, I had to get several hazers going to fill the massive room—reminiscent of thousands of people tanking ciggies in the stands like in the 80s. Sadly, something you can’t do anymore. On each corner of the rink, we had what are called light stars. These are basically the same sort of floodlights you’d find high above the ground in any typical stadium. Most importantly—and unlike some bits of equipment—you can get them in shot because they sort of look like they belong there and don’t look like complete shit. Gaffer for @simmonsandkamaz

@clovergreenstudio is an alluring and charming man. At the beginning of my career, I met Clover over a coffee in East London when he was in search of a new member for his team. He had an incredible understanding of art, fashion, and humanity. All his work was exceptional, and I was determined to convince him that I was the answer to all his problems. This was the closest I ever came to a job interview. He fell for my Iranian/Irish charm, and we worked together on editorial and fashion shoots for years to come. He realigned my understanding of what art in the image world could be and introduced me to some of the most fantastic people I now work with. I am very grateful to have learned from him what it is to have freedom as an artist. I have applied this to my own practice to keep a roof over my head all these years, to keep doing what I love, and most importantly, pay my gambling debts. Have confidence in your execution. Don’t seek validation. Believe in yourself. 365 party girl. Stuff like that. Sob story over.
