London-based architects working internationally on arts, education and residential projects

David Kohn Architects - @officedka media

“The architecture of David Kohn has made a significant contribution to revitalizing the often somewhat staid architectural scene here in Great Britain” Writes @jonastbury in the latest edition of leading German architecture magazine, @bauweltmagazine about the new quad @newcollegeoxford . “David Kohn has emerged as a unique figure in British architecture over the past decade. The work of his firm, David Kohn Architects, is often associated with the so-called postmodern renaissance in Britain due to its playful use of unusual shapes and colors. Kohn himself, however, avoids simple explanations.” Read the full article at #linkinbio

Oil pastel drawing of the tower at Gradel Quadrangles, @newcollegeoxford displayed @royalacademyarts #summerexhibition2025 We are delighted that @davidkohnarch’s drawing “Wallflower II” has been included by @farshidmoussavi @stephmacdonald6a @tomemerson6a in this year’s Summer Exhibition. The drawing is of the east facade of the tower designed by the studio that now stands on Mansfield Road in Oxford and marks the site of the new campus. Held every year without interruption since 1769, the Summer Exhibition is the world’s oldest open submission exhibition – meaning that anyone can enter their work to be considered for inclusion. It showcases a diverse array of contemporary works, including prints, paintings, films, photography, sculpture, and architectural works. This year for the first time, architecture has been integrated into all of the rooms, breaking down the siloed nature of previous editions to great effect. Since the practice was founded in 2007, work by #davidkohnarchitects has been included in the annual exhibition on nine occasions. Go to the #linkinbio to see all ten works together.

“One of my favorite books is ‘Anachronic Renaissance,’ by the American academics Christopher Wood and Alex Nagel: They have this conception of the architecture of the Renaissance as belonging, in the minds of its creators, to neither the future nor the past. And for me there’s something interesting about that. I would like to think of our work as syncretic, all the parts working together, not as a patchwork trying to catalogue the past.” Discover the work of @officedka in the first-ever print issue of @thegrandtouristpodcast, now available for purchase, and read this complete story online. “Knowing the ambition and culture of this English architect, the challenging project could be seen as an important turning point in a highly idiosyncratic career.” Writes Massimo Curzi in Issue 968 of Italian architecture journal @casabella1928, entitled, “Ways of Living”. The 18 page spread gives @massimocurziarchitetto and Federico Tranfa @pasquinitranfa ample space to unpack the Gradel Quadrangles project at @newcollegeoxford, its inspirations and execution. David will be giving a lecture in Milan on 19th May as part of Casabella’s ‘Laboratorio’ series. The lecture is open to the public and all are welcome. ‘Fruity eyefull’ Read @ollywainwright’s @guardian review of the Gradel Quadrangles at @newcollegeoxford #linkinbio Wainwright writes, ‘With its rhubarb and custard-coloured stonework, laid in harlequin diamond patterns, its bulbous roof of polygonal scales, and rows of carved creatures, it is a fruity eyeful to behold… a gutsy contribution to the college that gleefully pushes the limits of its founder’s motto: “Manners makyth man.”’ #pangolinPoMo #rhubarbandcustard #davidkohnarchitects #gradelquadrangles

“a certain lightness of spirit” Writes @chris.foges in his review of the Gradel Quadrangles @newcollegeoxford for @ribajournal #linkinbio: “The heft of stone and concrete leave no doubt that Gradel Quadrangles could endure far beyond its 100-year design life. The main impression, though, is not of weight but a certain lightness of spirit. For an architect, curves do not make for an easy life, but the evident pleasure taken in design will add to residents’ enjoyment of this rich, beguiling place.” 📸 @willpryce #davidkohnarchitects #newcollegeoxford #gradelquadrangles

2) Our Gradel Quadrangles project for @newcollegeoxford is complete Editor @robguywilson writes in today’s @architectsjournal, “this is quite a project: its play with decoration, historical form and iconography takes DKA’s idea of ‘communicative’ architecture, seen in previous projects such as the Red House and in the Design District, to another scale of complexity and urbanity.” Read the full article #linkinbio. A special shout out to stonemason Fergus Wessel @stoneletters_studio who carved the beautiful gargoyles and grotesques.
