I galavanted with my handkerchief, drank water for 50 people to survive the heat and was gassed with how the audience grew and grew when I was playing early in the day. But her style isn't eclecticism for eclecticism's sake—she's spoken about the importance of carving out space for underrepresented voices in dance music.⁠ ⁠ Her RA Mix makes that mission audible. So much has changed since I started 9 years ago🥹 I remember the conversation between me and my peers was “How do you feel confident to play our music in spaces where people may not enjoy/understand?” i used to say: Do it in a way that holds the energy and it’ll work cause our music is sooo infectious. I remember having to curate my own parties to prove that there’s an appetite for it, that it deserves a seat at the table amongst all other sounds and maybe, just maybe, at the big stages too. 9 years later, someone tagged me in a story from my Glastonbury Festival set this summer and said “Nooriyah sharing our culture on a global stage, absolutely gagged” and that’s when I stopped and was like yoooo the space has indeed shifted so much and im so proud to be a part of it❣️I’m so proud of how many doors have been knocked down in the last decade because I assure you it wasn’t easy AT ALL when we began. There are more artists and DJs in the space than ever now and even DJs that include these sounds on their USB that haven’t before. I’m literally travelling to cities I can’t pronounce and I hear our sounds more and more while seeing people swing what they got in the air.
