We’re thrilled to share that we’ve been hard at work on our new space for the past few months! It’s just a few steps down the same street. While we’ll be keeping the old location for other exciting projects, the lab will soon be found at 47 Rue de la Folie Méricourt. Although small parts are still under construction, we’re too excited to wait and will be hosting a soft launch with our friends from Loose Joints this Thursday 27th. Everyone is welcome—come join us!

We are very excited to show this very special project and first complete publication of THE CLASSROOM by Hicham Benohoud at our new Space 47 Rue de la Folie Méricourt 75011. A groundbreaking series around creativity and control from ‘90s Morocco. Frustrated by Morocco’s rigid education system, artist and teacher @hichambenohoud transformed his high school classroom into a darkroom, guiding students into uncanny, disobedient acts of self-expression. In stark, incongruous images, a surreal theatre of discipline and defiance emerges, where the mundanity of the classroom is infused with ideas of performance, politics, pedagogy and the body decades ahead of its time. Our friends from @jointsloose @sarahpespenon dived deep into Benohoud’s original negatives from the era to unearth this comprehensive edit and entrusted our team archiving, scanning, retouching, and hand printing these negatives with our now in house printer Stephane Cormier. Still parts in construction we will nevertheless inaugurate our new space with this very special exhibition and book launch of THE CLASSROOM on the 27 March.

Unearthing @hichambenohoud’s remarkable archive of playful, performative collaborations with Moroccan students was a labour of love, greatly supported by our friends at @laboratory_scan_developing who carefully transformed Benohoud’s negatives, based on @sarahpespenon’s exhaustive edit from original contact sheets of the series.
