TWO EVENINGS WITH PAUL MCCARTHY WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 13, 7:30PM Cathode Cinema presents Paul McCarthy: Early Works + A&E, Adolf & Eva / Adam & Eve, Mother 1974–2025 Screening + Q&A with Paul McCarthy and Lilith Stangenberg. An uncompromising survey of Paul McCarthy’s video practice, the night opens with a selection of rarely screened works from the 1970s and ’80s, including Basement Clown (1974), Mother/Father (1974), Experimental Dancer (1975), Cultural Soup (1987), and Family Tyranny (Modeling and Molding) (1987), which was made in collaboration with Mike Kelley. These works are followed by McCarthy’s latest collaboration with actress/artist Lilith Stangenberg, A&E, Adolf & Eva / Adam & Eve, Mother (2022/2025). A fantasy drama of Adolf Adam and Eva Eve. They’re beneath a large dead pine tree—Eva’s back rests against the trunk, Adolf lies in her lap. Adolf is the baby boy, Eva the pretend mother, feeding him like a bird. What begins as tender play between the two buffoons gradually slips into an escalating game that blurs the boundaries between intimacy, absurdity, control and violence. WARNING: CONTAINS PORTRAYALS OF GRAPHIC SEXUAL VIOLENCE INVOLVING BODILY FLUIDS WITHIN A PERFORMANCE ART CONTEXT. McCarthy and Stangenberg appear as SAINT SANTA & THE ELF— avatars engaged in a chaotic live event—accompanied by a shifting sonic backdrop from members of Extended Organ. Throughout the night, looping media installations operate in parallel with the live sets, transforming the venue into an immersive environment.
