@documentjournal I wanted to share this love story as a testament to suppressed LGBTQIA+ reality, hopeful and raw against the massive fight ahead. The desire of gay youth to make things change despite the risks. Love stronger than tradition and arrests. Homosexuality remains criminalized in most Arab countries. Egypt has toughened its legislation with provisions against "incitement to debauchery". Others have chosen "indecent assault" to defend and justify these acts of torture. LGBTQIA+ people are arbitrarily arrested by the Egyptian National Security Agency, in inhuman conditions. They systematically subject them to the worst treatment and encourage fellow detainees to physically and psychologically abuse them. Detainees are deprived of their fundamental rights. Severe and repeated beatings are commonplace in police custody. Forced anal examinations, internationally condemned as a form of torture, are nothing less than legalized rape. Transgender women detainees are regularly placed in men's cells, where they suffer abuse and ill-treatment. Security forces regularly arrest people in the street based on their gender expression. Phones are illegally seized and searched. Prosecutors never question the veracity of police reports. Systematically, detentions are extended and legal proceedings are launched against these people. Prosecutors use these elements to justify prolonged detentions, while the international community maintains a contemptuous and distressing silence. DUST CHINA ISSUE 03 Fashion Story THE GRACE UNSENT Inspired by Michel Foucault’s Herculine Barbin dite Alexina. DUST CHINA ANGLE @vincentrockins from @katemossagency Photographed by @allan.lab & Styling by @jeremiecbacque Creative Direction @douxqianlin this editorial conjures a spirit of feminine nonconformity — one that slips beyond the boundaries of traditional identity.
Herculine’s life unfolds like a quiet rebellion: a story of introspection under surveillance, of defiance shaped by ambiguity, and of the aching struggle to exist between naming and erasure. This work confronts the violence hidden within institutionalized gender norms and asks, without hesitation:
Do we really need gender? We believe gender is a performance — a choreography of repeated gestures that teach us how to speak, move, and inhabit ourselves. No one is born into a fixed identity; we are shaped by systems that define us before we can even define ourselves. Yet in Herculine’s solitude, something radical endures.
A body — unyielding, tender, and true — that holds love and selfhood without needing to be named. A presence that lives in the grey, where meaning slips, reforms, and dissolves.
From that in-between, a new femininity emerges: not assigned, not claimed — but felt. Fluid.
Uncontained.
Revelatory. A feminine energy that dismantles the binary and exposes the beautiful fractures beneath identity itself.
