Planetary Peasants 23.05-14.09.2025, Moritzburg Art Museum Halle, Germany In 2025, the end of the German Peasants’ War marks its 500th anniversary. This serves as the occasion for a contemporary artistic exploration. Based on the conditions and unresolved questions of the historical events, the project examines the state of globalized agriculture, the realities of farmers’ lives today, and the relevance of the demands made in 1525. The exhibition Planetary Peasants, a collaboration between the Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt and Werkleitz, presents 30 contemporary artistic positions from May 23 to September 14, 2025, at Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle (Saale). THE OLDENBURG GLEANERS SOCIETY CLUB 30.04.2025 - 09.06.2025 “Gleaning” traditionally refers to the practice of collecting surplus crops following a harvest and redistributing them to people in need. The act of gleaning was common from biblical times up until the eighteenth century. It was a strategy of survival and resourcefulness, essential to those marginalized by the emerging forces of capitalism: widows and orphans, the poor and the expropriated, newcomers and exiles. The Oldenburg Gleaners Society Club,curated by Sebastian Cichocki – building on his experience curating the 40th EVA International, Ireland’s Biennial of Contemporary Art – extends this idea of “gleaning,” which alternately serves as an artistic subject, a metaphor, and a curatorial methodology.    With works by: Orla Barry, Kim Beom, Kasper Bosmans, Jeamin Cha, Mitsutoshi Hanaga, Tamás Kaszás, Krisztián Kristóf, and The Randomroutines, Eustachy Kossakowski, Sharon Lockhart, Deirdre O’Mahony, Peter Nadin & Natsuko Uchino & Aimée Toledano, Rory Pilgrim, Iza Tarasewicz, Natsuko Uchino, Jennifer Walshe. Yellow Coal 2016-2024 Iza Tarasewicz Site specific installation Clay, ochre pigment, steel CK Zamek, Poznan, Poland from 19.10.2024 to 9.02.2025 Titled Yellow Coal installation references a short story by the Polish-Ukrainian author Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky from 1939, where a society channels bad feelings, anger, suffering, and negativity into a limitless energy resource. This work is perhaps the most political in my oeuvre and describes in a metaphorical way the chaos and turbulence we are in today, in many dimensions, be it private or public. To tap this energy, society redesigns private and public space and social interactions to induce bad feelings and proliferates “absorberators” to channel these streams of animosity and anger on local and global scales. Given the reality that, at many different and enmeshed levels, the world today is in a state of continuous crisis, this prognosticating satire offers a unique solution to our own political and ecological emergencies. Tapping into the infinite, sustainable, and renewable resource of socio-psychic trauma, the story turns our excess of hardship into an optimistic one and imagines new socio-technical arrangements within an increasingly nervous world. ARENA III, Iza Tarasewicz, Is it stable? Yes. Is it unstable? Yes, again. Unstable? Yes, again., 2024, Common Arts Foundation, Warsaw, Poland, exhibition view, photo: Franciszek Buchner. Courtesy Common Arts Foundation The title Arena III is a reference to the gathering places known from antiquity – amphitheaters and stadiums, places intended for political activity, entertainment, debates and gatherings. Iza Tarasewicz’s large-scale work premiered in 2018 at the Zachęta – National Gallery of Art. The artist then hung an 800-meter silicone rope on the façade of the Zachęta building, appropriating and rearranging its space. The work was created at a time when subsequent cultural institutions were being taken over by the right-wing government. Although it was not intended to be anyone's voice, it inevitably became a vehicle for the current political turbulence. The subsequent editions of "Arena III" in Poland and abroad were not only an expression of the artist's need to mark her presence and take over the space with the installation, but also of concern about the continuity and safety of culture. Moved from a public institution that was extremely important for Polish culture to city galleries that have a significant impact on the local fabric (State Art Gallery, Sopot; Arsenał Gallery, Białystok; Kaunas Artists House, Kaunas), and then to a place financed from the city budget but run by artists for artists (Skala Gallery, Poznań), the work will ultimately be presented in a private gallery belonging to a foundation supported by private funds. After being moved to the closed rooms of the gallery, the originally monumental, façade work becomes a three-dimensional loop reminiscent of entrails that seize the entire space with their knots. The path that “Arena III” had to take is as important as the work itself – its journey reveals the complexity of the issue of state and private patronage in supporting culture in Poland.
