Goodbye to my 40s. 50 tomorrow.. Night People out in two weeks. It’s been three years since I started this book. The most wonderful, crazy arduous process. Going all the way back to the 90s or even the beginning of my life.

These songs made for some crazy definitive moments in Night People

Here are a few sneak peeks from the book out September 16… I’ll also be speaking with one of my favorite DJs/one of the great musical minds @questlove the night before on September 15 to celebrate. Come join us at @symphonyspace, ticket link in stories 🩷

As a Donald Fagen devotee, I’ve got complicated feelings about the term “yacht rock”. It’s kinda silly and demeaning - lumping together a whole decade of often transcendent music made by incredible musicians & artists, many who have zero in common. But I also appreciate that it gives my favorite era a spotlight and an umbrella for people to stand under/discover it. This music influenced me so much I made an entire album about it (Uptown Special). So when @thecapts asked me to do a mix for @siriusxmyachtrock, I thought: why not use it to show how I’ve transcended my inner conflict? Hot blends, matchless songs, healthy debate. P.S. Out of respect to the man himself, there’s no Steely Dan on this mix. You’re welcome/I’m sorry. Premieres today on SiriusXIM Channel 15. (shout out @rickbeato1@thekennyloggins & @johnoatesofficial for the soundbites)

The 90s NYC club scene was insane. So I wrote a memoir about surviving it. From stalking Stretch Armstrong to bite his mixes, to getting my first breaks from promoters like Bill Spector, Bonnie & Belinda, Big Frank & Marc LaBelle. From falling in love with Pete Rock and Premier’s beats that made me desperate to become a DJ, to my mother somehow being out in the clubs as much as I was, to my bestie Simon Rex talking me down from many drug panic attacks, to Nikka Costa giving me my first shot as an up-and-coming producer. I wrote about the compulsions, the neuroses, the nights that almost broke me—and how my incredible partner helped turn a reformed night person into... well, still a night person, but a healthier one. a massive shoutout to @willwelch and the @gq crew and @ellenvonunwerth for turning my book into this visual feast and to Chris Heath for the psychological deep dive that made me confront even more shit on the page. Most my adult life, I’ve never lived more than half a mile from Canal & West Broadway. On the corner, there’s a club once called New Music Cafe. On Tuesday nights we did a party called Sweet Thang. Biggie, Guru, Jay-Z, Big Pun, Fat Joe all came down. It’s been about 20 other venues since then, but I still get a charge when I walk past the building. It’s fun now playing some of the same records that tore down those walls 30 years later in an incredible club like Gabriela’s. Seeing kids who weren’t alive get down to those same tunes. Night People is my ode to that very special time In New York. Photos by @alice_a2studio and @kennyrodz.
