If you can’t be handsome, be handy...I started building my own footdecks a while ago. First, I used particleboard because I’d heard @chrissmithermusic talk about it being more pitch-neutral than any variety of wood and so you could avoid clashing tones. I would go to the lumber shop at the corner of Chrystie & Rivington and bargain for whatever leftovers they had. I made a few decks of different width and thickness and even built one with hinges down the middle that I could fold in half and stuff in a backpack. That one lives under my bed now, or maybe behind my dresser. Lately I’ve been using this prefab Australian device called a Wazinator. It’s got a semi-hollow core and a built-in pickup, and I can get it to really attack when i want it to. Anyway, the funny thing about the streets these days is how many skate deck carcasses you come across if you look down and to the left. They’re everywhere, not just along the fringe of the skatepark. This one doesn’t have that low end dig that I’m used to, and I have yet to make it work with an acoustic guitar, but it sure comes through hawt when matched up with the Danelectro & Arp Odyssey (bottlecaps: who knew?!) I’m playing it here on a song called “Rat Man” which I wrote about an old neighbor on the Bowery and which I think I’m going to record soon and submit to NYC’s Rat Czar as the official anthem of the coordinated health and sanitation agencies of greater nyc. 🎥 @brendan_mcknight_director + @jeffreylewisish . . #danelectro #arpoddyssey #chrissmither #wazinator #bowery #skateboarding
