BIETRY @pattersonflynn1943 inspired by antique textiles, I found traveling in #Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, and #Dakar, Senegal. Each textile had two different patterns sewn together. In making Bietry, we kept the concept of pairing two unlike things together. In Bietry’s case, a broken, cross-stitch embroidery-like geo is paired with a whimsical flower border. This abaca version of the rug is done in a braided construction. The rug is interpreted two ways: as a wool flatweave and as an abaca. They each feature a coiled, shaped border. Cocody was inspired by a hand-painted floor done with stylized, graphic motifs. We reinterpreted the floor as a rug with layers of concentric borders. A shapeshifting persona: Cocody is quite graphic in Black & Bone, yet painterly and soft when done in analogous seafoam colors. The rug is made of handspun silk & oxidized wool. The wool is given a treatment that degrades the wool down to the warp and gives a timeworn look. The handspun silk has more variation in thickness compared to machine-spun silk and gives it more of a rustic texture.
