One good surprise of 2024 was dear Christopher Niquet asking me to open my vault of Polaroids and discuss about casting for his number 8 Study magazine ♥️ “The eighth issue of Study delves into the archives of casting director Dominique Vinant whose career was transformative within the fashion industry. Vinant began working in the late 90s for avant-garde Parisian designers such as Ann Demeulemeester, Martin Margiela, Martine Sitbon, or Yohji Yamamoto, playing a pivotal role in redefining traditional beauty standards. Her work celebrated uniqueness, showcasing models with distinct characteristics and personalities that resonated deeply with the visionary aesthetics of the designers she collaborated with. Vinant’s casting approach aligned with the deconstructivist fashion movement of the time, where designers were not merely creating clothes but also challenging societal norms around fashion, identity, and beauty standards. The « cabines » of models she assembled were integral to the entire narrative of these designers’ shows, making her influence as much cultural as it was visual, helping to expand the concept of beauty. Among the great designers I’ve been casting for, Martine Sitbon @martinesitbon has a very special place in my heart. I’ve been lucky to start working with her and her brilliant Art Director husband Marc Ascoli @marcascoli in 1997 for her shows and following them Rue du Mail 🎡 which makes all together 15 years collaboration! That is what can be called a real faithful fashion family ❤️ Recently working on my archives for Study Magazine @study.magazine , it’s been very cool diving into Martine’s alternative vision of fashion and re-discover Polaroids of these special beauties casted for her strong collections. Mon histoire avec Martin Margiela commence avec ce défilé AH92. Else Skallvoll @elsehsth travaille alors pour la Maison Martin Margiela et nous présente l’un à l’autre. Je défile à l’Armée du Salut, entre les meubles, la fanfare et aux côtés notamment de Marie-Sophie Wilson @fruitbat2000 et Cecilia Chancellor @ceciliachancellor . Puis pour le défilé noir Cité Véron la saison suivante et d’autres présentations… Alexandre de Betak @alexdebetak nous reconnecte fin 99 pour le casting de plusieurs défilés Hermès par Martin Margiela @hermesbymargielaarchive. Une expérience 5 étoiles et des recherches encore une fois sur mesure ! Happée par des aventures cinématographiques, je dois quitter Hermès et Martin, mais le retrouve avec bonheur en 2006 via Samantha Garrett @sammygagarrett pour le casting de ses dernières collections au sein de la Maison Martin Margiela, qu’il quitte discrètement évidemment après le mythique défilé des 20 ans en septembre 2008.
