At a whopping 30.5 million square feet, #India’s Lukshmi Vilas Palace ( @lukshmivilaspalace) is the world’s largest private residence; ten times bigger than Turkey’s White Palace and the second largest house on the planet, its square footage is 36 times that of Buckingham Palace. “This is our family home, but ultimately it is a home for the people of India,” says Her Highness Maharani Radhikaraje Gaekwad of #Baroda ( @radhikaraje) whose 2002 wedding to Samarjitsinh Ranjitsinh Gaekwad (then the heir to the Baroda throne and King since 2012), put her in a unique position as the custodian of one of India’s most prominent homes and the culture-first legacy of the Gaekwads. Commissioned by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III in 1878, Lukshmi Vilas Palace was ahead of its time. It remains one of the most enduring examples of Indo-Saracenic architecture: Islamic domes, Hindu temple carvings and Mughal garden designs blend with European touches, such as the clock tower that still glows red when the royal family is in residence. It holds the record for the largest private residence in the world. “The scale of the palace is larger than life. I’ve lived here for 23 years and even now I’m discovering things for the very first time,” says Radhikaraje of the 135-years-old Lukshmi Vilas Palace. “I’ve come to regard it as our oldest family member.” Set in modern-day #Vadodara, #Gujarat and commissioned by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III in 1878, this monumetal Indian palace is a place of discovery. For 38 years, photographer Anita Calero ( @anita_calero_arboleda) had collected objects, artworks and furnishings – many made by friends or acquired through her extensive travels – in a large Chelsea loft before she decided to decamp full-time to her country home in her native Colombia. However, last year, the Big Apple beckoned again. This time around, she had very few criteria for the space she would share with her dog, Lulow. “I wanted a room with a fireplace,” says the photographer. In New York, that’s a bit of a tall order – wood-burning fireplaces can only be maintained in homes built before 2015. When Calero closed on this studio apartment with the relative rarity in an Art Deco building last August, its interiors had been largely stripped of any historic detailing. What it lacked in design, it made up for in mirrors – they covered the wall with the functional fireplace as well as the ceiling and doors in the entry hall. Ornate, nostalgic and brimming with shining examples of Indian artisanal heritage, today AD revisits Sonam Kapoor’s ( @sonamkapoor) artfully layered Mumbai home. “This house represents a new chapter for me, as a woman, a collector – and a mother,” Sonam Kapoor declares of the new place, which she shares with her husband, entrepreneur Anand Ahuja, and their toddler son, Vayu. Having spent years in London, it was a deep-breath moment to make the decision to spend more time in Mumbai. Derring-do is also part of Kapoor’s DNA, traceable back in a matriarchal line of cultured women with a talent for interiors. It was, in fact, her maternal grandmother who lit the flame of her aesthetic interests. “Having come from a pre-partition Sindhi family in Karachi who had had to start over again [after the 1947 division of India and Pakistan], my grandmother had a refinement in her tastes. It is hard to overstate her influence on me,” Kapoor recalls. To help realize her vision, Kapoor asked her aunt, the acclaimed Indian designer Kavita Singh ( @kavitasinghinteriors), to collaborate. With its rolling curves and sculptural stonework, Casa Milà is a Gaudí original, born of bold ideas and met with mixed reactions. Commissioned by Pere Milà and his wife, Roser Segimon, and designed by Antoni Gaudí, Casa Milà (also known as “La Pedrera”) was built between 1906 and 1912. In fact, this structure was Gaudí’s last major project before he devoted himself entirely to his magnum opus, La Sagrada Família. When built, the project was fraught with controversies and embroiled in public discourse, but it was in many ways before its time. Now it’s recognised as one of Gaudí’s greatest works. Casa Milà solidified Gaudí’s reputation as a visionary: It’s a masterpiece of Catalan modernism, straddling the 19th-century Art Nouveau movement and the future of modern architecture. Here, in the heart of Puglia, time flows slowly, the body regenerates, creativity resurfaces. Quiet pervades everything: from the dry stone walls to the trulli, rediscovered, from the blue of the sea to the optical white of the ancient dwellings. And it is precisely one of these dwellings that is the protagonist of the long journey that has come down to us since the 1950s. A period relic, built in the heart of the Apulian countryside, it bears the name Casa Caroseno ( @casacaroseno), owned by Francesca and Giuseppe Longo, managers and creative minds of this earthly Eden, coordinated by Nonna Rosetta and Giovanni Longo, chef and owner of Osteria Caroseno ( @osteriacaroseno). "In the landscape of the Apulian countryside, nestled among fields of cherry trees and wheat, Casa Caroseno is a rural villa built by the owners' grandparents. It was originally a retreat where they could relax after a long day's work," Maura and Piervito, the two founders of Opus Atelier ( @opus.atelier), the architectural firm behind the design of this contemporary guest house tell us. Musically speaking, the term “largo” means “dignified and slow”, which offers a clue as to how The Largo ( @thelargoporto) got its name. Relaxed and elegant, the 18-room hotel in the seaside town of Porto occupies five linked 14th-, 16th- and 19th-century buildings, which have been sensitively updated by Danish studio Space Copenhagen ( @spacecopenhagen) (aka Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou) and the Danish travel collective Annassurra. While the calm colour palette prompts you to wind down, the hotel’s culture works at a deeper level to foster slow living.
