l’Amazonie telle comme je l’entends... Over the past decade, I have been granted the extraordinary privilege of frequenting the Amazon rainforest, immersing myself in Nature’s grand spectacle - from minuscule fungi to towering trees, from insects to jaguars and monkeys, traversing the paths of birds and dolphins, and submerging into the enchanting symphony of jungle sounds. The Laboratory of Applied Bioacoustics at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, BarcelonaTech (UPC) @la_upc, has pioneered bioacoustic technology, fundamentally transforming the approach to biodiversity monitoring. Through Project Providence, a collaborative effort with the Institute of Mamiraua (IDSM) @institutomamiraua, generously funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation @moorefound, The Sense of Silence Foundation @thesenseofsilence, and @rolex, our research strives to deepen our understanding of the challenges faced by rainforests. Our goal is to propose viable solutions for harmonious coexistence with Nature, steering clear of an irreversible tipping point. The perception of sound is a universal experience shared by all living beings on Earth, whether aquatic, terrestrial, plant, or animal. Listening to the symphony of Life provides us with a unique opportunity to comprehend. Through a collection of photographs captured during this boundless journey, I extend an invitation for you to tune into the voice of Nature and embrace the future of the Amazon.
Happy birthday Sylvia
Happy birthday dear @dr.sylviaearle 🤍🌊
Announcing UN World Oceans Day 2025: Wonder
🔊 The Pulse of Nature + Sperm Whale Sonar + Jungle Symphonies 5 Min with a Bio-Acoustician | EP 18 🎤 Meet Dr. Michel André: Director of the Laboratory of Applied Bioacoustics (LAB), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC), using sound to understand and protect life on Earth. 🔍 What's Fascinating Dr. André? Sound may be the only truly universal sense shared by animals, plants, land, and sea. Every organism responds to vibrations. Dr. André is especially fascinated by how creatures like sperm whales use sonar with astonishing precision, offering a window into a way of sensing the world that’s both complex and deeply humbling. 🌍 Impact on the World Through the LIDO project, Dr. André has built real-time acoustic observatories that monitor biodiversity across oceans and rainforests. This technology has influenced international policy and conservation efforts, offering a non-invasive way to track the health of ecosystems in real time. 🎶 Fun and Whimsical Research In the Amazon, Dr. André and his team once set up passive acoustic sensors to hear what the forest sounded like when no one was listening. What they got back was a jungle symphony - rich, rhythmic, and completely unexpected. That simple experiment evolved into a system for tracking biodiversity on a massive scale. 🚀 If Time and Money Were No Object... Dr. André would design a global acoustic nervous system for the planet. He would deploy sensors in oceans, deserts and forests, all listening together. This network could learn to recognize ecological shifts before they’re visible and become our early warning system. 🔉What can sound reveal about our ecosystem? Bioacoustics lets us detect what we can’t see. For example, a healthy coral reef sounds radically different from a degraded one. By listening, we get important insights into the ecosystems. Through these soundscapes, we can sense not only who is there, but how they live and how their world is changing. 📝 Read the full interview and join XPANSE 2nd Edition waiting list on the link in our bio.
