A visual journal of my travels, work, hobbies & life
I snapped this image with friends in Key West outside of a tourist trap on the waterfront. I kind of fell in love with the sea sponge man and its creator, whomever they may be. I ended up printing this in my darkroom for my son’s first Christmas gift and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Which is a long way of saying that I’m trying something new here. I’m offering “Sponge Man” in an edition of 5 $75 each or $110 in a color frame 11” x 14” matted. Print is made on 8” x 10” fiber paper to archival standards DM if you’re interested. Only 5 available
Each summer the Dutchess County Fair opens to locals and tourists alike. And each summer, I go. Not everybody in town goes. In fact, a lot of people I meet express their disdain for the fair. It’s usually something about crowds or traffic or some other inane, mild inconvenience. But I love the fair. To me, it is a demarcation of time. A moment to take stalk of what has happened since the last time you ate an elephant ear and overpaid to toss a ring toward a bottle. Its ability to make me reflect on the past year and feel both nostalgic for a time I don’t actually have any interest in going back to and, hopeful that next year might be better, are almost religious in nature. In thinking about how to photograph the fair I chose to look at the parts that come back year after year. The things that stay the same in a turbulent, ever-changing world. We all have our favorite fair food, or ride, or game. These, more than anything else, are the things that awed us as children at the fair. Each year I look for them hoping they will still be there. Blinking their neon lights, beckoning me to play, and maybe think a little bit about life. #dutchesscountyfair #dutchesscountyfairgrounds
Sailing the Society Islands in French Polynesia with friends and family was an absolute dream. Looking out at Bora Bora from Taha’a. @bethannecaples @dayyanarmstrong @rmarsh20 @abbyraphel @gabriellecleopatra
Such a fun shoot at this dreamy house in Dutchess County last week. This is one of those spots where when you’re done shooting, you sit out on the lawn and look over the land and really appreciate how special it is, and how endlessly beautiful the Hudson Valley is.
Dreaming of strong winds and calm seas in the British Virgin Islands right now.
My wife happens to be an amazing photographer without knowing it. Some people just have an eye for it. She shot this on an old Leica Minilux back when you could pick those rectangular paperweights up for next to nothing. I had always loved this image of Constantin Brancusi‘s studio in Paris so for our five-year-wedding anniversary (wood is the traditional gift) I had a custom wood frame made and printed this negative of hers in the darkroom. It now sits in our living room next to our record player (another past gift to her) where I get to see it every day.
Irish Spring. So lucky to have been able to take Landis on a road trip through the country as a family. Finally just commit to a single camera and found myself still totally in love with my #leicam262
Had the absolute honor and privilege of witnessing two friends make a lifelong commitment to each other last year. Michael and Michelle married at the Harvard Club in New York City and they were kind enough to let me run around behind the scenes documenting the day for them. I shot entirely on film and hand printed my selects in the darkroom. I then matted and built a linen clamshell box to house the collection. Everything was done to archival standards so this book will last for generations. In addition I scanned the negatives so they could share with friends and family. When I started this project, the idea was born from a desire to recreate classic wedding albums of my parent’s and grandparent’s era. I deeply enjoyed documenting these weddings and would love to continue to do so in this style.
