I was honored to receive the Provincetown Theatre's Visionary Impact Award in the birthplace of the American Theatre. A truly magical night. Telling our stories boldly and proudly is more important than ever. With @hadestown @littleshopnyc and @justintimebway currently running and Ragtime @lctheater , Caroline @mcctheater @jackofheartsclubmusical @ptowntheater and @kissofthespiderwomanfilm opening in movie theatres across the country on October 10th it's going to be a busy fall. Living it up at the Copa! Had a wonderful time with friends from my high school student government days. Feeling blessed to have Carrie Rose and Lisa Mirabella Broughton as friends for nearly five decades(and delighted to have the wonderful Annie join us). As always, Jonathan Groff made everyone feel welcome. Having the great Tony Goldwyn in the house was a true treat(we did The Inheritance on Broadway together) and a lovely visit from Emily Bergl was icing on the cake. Just in Time is as good as it gets. Today the curtain goes up on the final performance of our production of @gypsybway. From my early conversations with @audramcdonald and the Laurents, Sondheim, Styne and Preminger estates to waiting for George C Wolfe's schedule to free up to bringing my great partner Mara Isaacs @octopustheatricals along and then later @kevinmryan and @carterdianescott, this production has been a labor of love. @camilleabrown's groundbreaking choreography and Andy Einhorn's genius music direction straight from the beginning of the overture to the final notes ensured we had the full bodied sound worthy of the first show to reopen the Majestic Theatre. The entire co-producing family knew that we were creating history by supporting George's brilliant vision and telling this story through the lens of a black woman. In doing so we made history. The entire cast was perfection: @dannybur was breathtaking as Herbie, dignified, hopelessly in love with the family at its center; @joynwoods and @curlybroad were extraordinary as Rose's daughters, finding their way in a world filled with roadblocks both familial and cultural; @kevincsolak brought Gene Kelly-like athleticism to Tulsa and our strippers @queenlesli @mylindamae @thelilithomas brought down the house every night. The entire company of @gypsybway did it for the right reasons: artistic integrity, ensuring that younger audiences could dream bigger because they saw themselves on stage in roles that had never been available to them before. I have never been more proud of a production. This afternoon the curtain will go up, we'll light the lights and once more we'll see a performance for the ages. Mamma's gonna show it to you. Happy Pride! I'll never forget the afternoon in June I spent celebrating Pride with these human rights warriors. Terrence McNally, Edie Windsor and Chita Rivera were trailblazers who changed hearts and minds with their courage and passion. On the day of the Tony Awards I want to give a shout out to the team at Tom Kirdahy Productions. We opened two shows on Broadway this year, garnering a total of eleven Tony nominations. And of course Hadestown and Little Shop of Horrors continue to thrill audiences years after opening. I couldn't have done it without these fiercely intelligent, passionate, gifted theatre makers.
