It’s ELLE Style Awards time ✨ and this year’s ceremony and corresponding special issue marks a particularly meaningful milestone for ELLE: our 40th anniversary in the UK. Across four decades, @elleuk has championed creativity, rule-breaking individuality, and the people shaping the cultural moment — and this year’s honourees, which we’ll celebrate next week, epitomise that legacy. We have a phenomenal list of winners, which includes Riz Ahmed, Naomi Ackie, Alexa Chung and Lola Young. And they are all talents who have used their work and platforms to help redefine the ways we think about film, music, literature, fashion and how we use style to express ourselves. They’ve inspired not only our editors but have captured the imagination of our community of readers and it’s our privilege to celebrate their impact on the landscape of British culture and fashion. Alexa Chung has been many things – broadcast journalist, creative director, catwalk model, campaign star, ballet-flat aficionado, the list goes on – but Alexa remains, forever, a British style icon. In conversation with #NicolaCoughlan, she reflects on her life in fashion, including the infamous indie-sleaze era (‘it really was as fun as it looked’), and reveals her next move ✨ @alexachung wears @celine by Michael Rider Photographer @fabienmontique Stylist @charlesvarenne Design Director @zoyakaye Fashion Director @avrilmair Deputy Editor/Culture Director @lenadecasparis Photography Director @jeslucy Acting Entertainment Director @olivia__blair Art Director @charlottewallace.artdirector Picture Editor @_abiihollister Hair @emilie.bromley Make up @wendyrowe Manicure @manicuredbysimone Set Design @the_setstylist Movement Director @pierrepodevyn Stylist Assistant @sabrinaleina_ Interview @nicolacoughlan

With so much talk this year about the lack of women leading fashion’s legacy brands, our SEP issue felt like the perfect time to spotlight the women who will no doubt have a hand in shaping the industry’s future. I love this portfolio featuring the amazing @tolucoker @biancasaunders @paulinedujancourt @felicitykay @debahekmat and @olyaolya - in our SEP issue of @elleuk. Out now! More from Jeff Giles’ excellent cover story with Winona Ryder for our SEP issue: Lately, female directors have made it clear they think Winona would benefit from some Botox: ‘They’ll say, “Just relax your forehead. Relax.” I’m trying to be a great actor, and they’re saying that over and over. It’s nice that people are talking about how it’s OK to age, but there’s still enormous pressure. Every role I get is for a mother, you know? My career has definitely shifted.’ Ryder smiles, unphased by all this. She seems to wear the pressure of ageing like a sundress. ‘So, I think what I aspire to, finally, is to play the judge who’s like, “Chambers now, counsellor! Too far!”’ She rises slightly from her seat to deliver the line and booms it out giddily. From her conception in the world’s hippest bookshop to poker nights with Al Pacino, Winona Ryder is the coolest icon in Hollywood. As her hit show ‘Stranger Things’ draws to a close, she sits down with @jeffmgiles, who first interviewed her 35 years ago, to discuss what’s changed. I don’t know anyone with an origin story quite like Winona Ryder’s. Her counterculture writer and activist parents conceived her in the iconic City Lights bookshop in San Francisco. She cuts her own hair, rejects filler, avoids social media, and reads books until the sun goes down each day — Leonard Cohen playing softly in the background. The enduring sense of intelligence, cool, and timelessness of Winona made her the perfect star of our September issue. The last time she appeared on the cover of ELLE UK was in July 2009. And in preparation for our shoot this year, I spent a weekend revisiting some of her most iconic films — movies I grew up on including Beetlejuice, Reality Bites, Edward Scissorhands, Girl, Interrupted and The Age of Innocence. They are just as compelling today as they were when they were released decades ago. Now she’s preparing for the release of her final season of Stranger Things, out this autumn. ‘I was the oldest person on the set,’ she tells @jeffmgiles. ‘I started my career as the youngest, and I always wanted to be older.’ Read his excellent and insightful interview with the famously private star, who we shot in the best of the season’s new collections, in the September issue on newsstands next week. We’re continuing our summer celebration of women in music with a special digital cover starring @oliviadeano ✨ She’s preparing to release her second album, The Art Of Loving, a project that immediately grabbed my attention when she revealed it was inspired by bell hooks’ seminal book, All About Love, and artist Mickalene Thomas’s compelling exhibition of the same name. Olivia tells @oliviapetter about her evolving relationship with herself and how she found her strength.
