I don’t know anyone with an origin story quite like Winona Ryder’s. Her counterculture writer and activist parents conceived her in the iconic City Lights bookshop in San Francisco. She cuts her own hair, rejects filler, avoids social media, and reads books until the sun goes down each day — Leonard Cohen playing softly in the background. The enduring sense of intelligence, cool, and timelessness of Winona made her the perfect star of our September issue. The last time she appeared on the cover of ELLE UK was in July 2009. And in preparation for our shoot this year, I spent a weekend revisiting some of her most iconic films — movies I grew up on including Beetlejuice, Reality Bites, Edward Scissorhands, Girl, Interrupted and The Age of Innocence. They are just as compelling today as they were when they were released decades ago.
