K-448 A Set of Notes “Sul Gusto”. A recommendation by Fabrizia Bandi: Dorfles G., Kitsch. An anthology of bad taste Studio Vista London, 1969 A Set of Notes “Sul Gusto” presents brief, informal conversations that arise from questions about everyday adjectives — seemingly simple words that open deeper lines of thought. Through exchanges with philosophers, curators, and artists, these conversations give rise to new readings and reflections. Taste seeks to capture that precise moment when we first encounter an object and are struck by wonder — when beauty, as an object of taste, begins to resemble the object of surprise. Alongside the kind of perfection recognized by reason, we perceive a mysterious excellence — something that appeals to taste yet escapes the grasp of intellect. The senses register it, but reason cannot articulate it; lacking precise words or concepts, we are left with that je ne sais quoi — an indefinable charm. For a long time, taste struggled to establish itself as a field of inquiry within studies of art, literature, and design. Still, it remains central in a number of key philosophical and critical texts — from Giorgio Agamben’s Gusto, Montesquieu’s Essay on Taste, Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Remarks on Colour, to Francis Haskell’s Patrons and Painters. Through this project, we aim to spark a broader reflection on the meaning and complexity of taste, exploring its dynamics as a faculty of aesthetic judgment. “The 18th century in Europe is the era when the debate on “taste” exploded. David Hume, the most radical of the British Empiricists, is without doubt one of its central figures,” says Fabrizia Bandi, Research Fellow at the Università degli Studi di Milano, when asked to explore the ongoing discourse on taste. She continues: “Am essential italian voice in the 20th century is Gillo Dorfles, with Kitsch: An Anthology of Bad Taste.” Photography contribution by Michele Prisco. @micheleprisco__ @filippo.antonioli
