👁️🍉 book review 🍉👁️ @deedlina was absolutely right when she said I could read this in one sitting – though it actually took me 3-4. In Q&A, conversation-style, leading pro-Palestine voices Noam Chomsky (an American professor and intellectual) and Ilan Pappe (an Israeli historian), discuss the history of Palestinian persecution and possible solutions for Palestinian liberation. This book was published in 2015 – almost a decade ago – but details the same sordid violence and oppression that we’re witnessing through social media today. One section describes Gaza in 2014, when a young Palestinian journalist watched his friend in a car clearly marked “Press”, get bombed. He said that 70% of ambulances had been destroyed and two thirds of the wounded were women and children. How is history perpetually repeating itself on this land, decade after decade, with no protection, no justice, for the Palestinians native to it!?! Pappe says, “The reason why we are all debating this is because on the ground, the machine of destruction does not stop for one day. We therefore don’t have the luxury to wait any longer. Time is not on our side. We know that while we wait, many terrible things are happening.” …This was written in 2015. Almost ten years ago. That “machine of destruction” has been allowed to persist, unchecked, and those “many terrible things” have multiplied beyond imagination. “On Palestine” is packed with lots of history, politics, and speculative one-state vs. two-state solutions, and the interview style might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I promise you’ll finish it feeling so much more informed, educated, and most of all, enraged.
