Part of the joy as a photographer is having the honor to work with pinnacle design classics. The iconic PH artichoke lamp designed by Poul Henningsen in 1958 as his crowning achievement, now remixed and a key part of the Pale Rose collection. The initial concept, featuring a goldfish within a perfume bottle, met a swift dismissal. I’m told the editor’s eyes welled up at the mere suggestion. The subsequent approach, however, fared considerably better. Squeezing both a delicate rose and a crisp one-hundred-dollar bill into a Chanel bottle was no small accomplishment. This feat was deftly executed by none other than Joel Berg, the art director of Harper’s Bazaar during that era when teams operated on a more intimate scale. A cameo. Literally hands on participation by me. Almost like the great Dario Argento who used his gloved hands in front of the camera while filming the slashing. However the motive was somewhat the opposite. The little Pacesetter, aka the Pacemaker invented by Swedish scientists in 1950’s and forever changing the life of so many born with heart problems.
