So first things first: it was probably a bad idea to use two completely different film rolls—but that’s what I had on hand at the time. I promise that next time a new model of an old camera gets launched and I happen to have both, I’ll use the same film.
My initial reaction upon seeing the results from the Rollei 35AF was shock. I was happy with how the photos turned out, which was surprising, considering I didn’t have a great time shooting with it. The build quality isn’t great—I could hear the film struggling to spool inside the camera. The shutter button feels flimsy and awkward to use, and the dials feel very plasticky. All of these issues become even more apparent when you have the original camera in your other hand. The build quality of the Rollei 35TE is exceptional by comparison.
In conclusion, while the results are decent and the autofocus and metering work well, I probably won’t be using this camera much. It just doesn’t feel good to shoot with—it somehow felt worse than a disposable camera. Maybe it’s just my specific unit, or maybe it’s the result of the rush to produce more units (I ordered this camera in September and only just received it). That said, if the build quality improves, I’d definitely give it another shot. I enjoy the form factor, and even though it’s slightly bigger than the original, it’s still a great companion.
